Josiah has joined the millions of americans that suffer from seasonal allergies. Patricia gave us a heads up that both her and Yvonne suffered from seasonal allergies, but up till not that haven't reared their ugly head. However last weekend at an Easter Egg Hunt in Lancaster, PA Josiah had a truly frightening reaction to the freshly cut grass. Here's the before and after:
We brought him inside, stripped him down and gave him a bath to get all the pollen off him. Luckily my cousin's wife is a physician's assistant that was able to relieve the swelling and deal with the extremely woried parents. The worst part was when the swelling above his left eye actually pushed it's way out of Josiah's eye! I thought that his eyeball popped out and almost lost it for a second. But the PA just pushed the swelling back inside and we continud to ice his eyes and comfort the little guy.
We went to the allergist a few days later and had him tested. He was a brave little man while they pricked his back with various allergins. After 20 minutes of holding his hands so he wouldn't scratch, the tests were definitive: Our little man is allergic to grass pollen, tree pollen ragweed, cats and dogs.
The pediatric allergy specialist we saw was old school: a 1970's style split-level with the matching interior decor. The receptionist was about 70 years old and clearly confused by our "ebony & ivory" family. While I was checking out, she said, "he looks like he keeps you busy!" And I explained that he's actually the oldest of three. She replied, "are they all related?" I understood the question and the question behind the question and assured her that they were all related.

How scary! Has he ever played in the grass before and nothing happened? Allergies kind of confuse me and I just don't get the allergies but not known for long periods of time. My son is getting tested tomorrow because he has been having a lot of problems with runny nose, coughing and basically they think he has asthma. Did the test hurt him? My son is scared of doctors and things that even come close to hurting. I am hoping my son isn't allergic to our dogs because they are family but my son does need to breathe. I have a hard time with the fact that we have had dogs his whole life and don't get how symptoms are appearing now. Do you have cats or dogs? I hope not because I know it would sad to give them away.
Did they give you any information on how to avoid the allergy triggers and such?
Oh my word! I would have been a mess.
Glad you guys figured out what it is and can learn how to handle it. Poor little guy.
Oh my goodness that's scary! I about lost my dinner with the eye-popping details...
Sometimes I just don't know if it's better for people to say what they mean or fail at trying to hide it.
Crazy.
that is just about the saddest thing I have ever seen! Poor J-man! Bless his little heart for dealing with that!
